A high gloss always requires two coats. Two options are possible:
1. A first coat (on a varnisher) using a matt varnish (solvent or water-based), also known as an undercoat, and a second coat with a UV glossy varnish applied by screen-printing.
2. A first coat of UV varnish applied by screen-printing with an anti-penetrating additive, followed by a second coat of glossy UV varnish applied by screen-printing.
In our experience, two successive coats of glossy UV varnish applied by screen printing do not give satisfactory results.
Care must be taken for fine lines and tight register – the first pass matt varnish may spread more than the second pass gloss and can give a matt halo effect on fine-line varnishing. Litho varnishing will not give the same level of holdout or gloss as a silkscreen UV varnish.
